Manufacturing sector to create 40 million jobs

The Indian manufacturing sector would be able to create 40 million employment opportunities by 2020, according to the National Skill Development Corporation

The burgeoning Indian manufacturing sector would need nearly 40 million additional skilled workforce by the year 2020 in order to support its rapid growth, according to the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) managing director and CEO, Dilip Chenoy. With the draft of the National Manufacturing Policy (NMP) on the anvil, future prospects of the sector look quite promising.

It is touted that the manufacturing sector is going to create immense employment scope for the employable mass in the nation in the days to come. In fact, the government has recently approved the draft of NMP which intends to increase the share of manufacturing in India’s GDP to 25% within 2025 from the present figure of around 16%.
Need for skilled manpower
According to Mr Chenoy, India will need to employ about 90 million people in the manufacturing sector by 2022; presently, the sector employs about 50 million people. Therefore, in the coming days, there would be a huge need for skilled workforce. In this context, James Thomas, country manager at Kronos Inc, said, “The hiring trends in the Indian manufacturing industry are indicative of the fact that there is immense demand for higher skilled and younger workforce. India boasts of large, young and educated workforce waiting to burst into the global arena with aspirations to achieve excellence via hard work. Increasing the quality standards through focussed training and skill upgradation, India would obtain the status of being unbeatable.”
According to Moumita Chakraborty, HR manager at Skillsets Online, a small-sized Kolkata based ITeS enterprise, “Skilled workforce helps increase the productivity. With much stress on productivity nowadays, it is absolutely essential to impart trainings and organise workshops to help the employees cultivate the right skill sets.”
NSDC has established sector skills council called Automotive Skills Development Council (ASDC), Security Knowledge and Skills Development Council (SKSDC), and Indian Energy Skill Development (IESD) in order to improve the standards of quality of the workforce involved in the manufacturing sector.

The Need of Hour !

The term ‘skill’, refers to ‘a level of proficiency obtained in a specific activity.’ In this fast paced world, where the going gets tougher at each level, apart from a basic understanding of things, it is imperative that one has sound knowledge of technical skills. Although there is no dearth of technical degree holders in today’s world, yet one would always prefer a skilled engineer. Professional colleges have limitations as their curriculum doesn’t cover specialized professional trainings and most engineering students realize this bitter truth only once they have stepped into the real world of employment competitiveness.Technology pros looking to find new work or even to secure their jobs should have at least one major skill which they can bank upon.

The beginning of the 21st century has seen the dawn of a new era; the era of machinery and automation. Most of our industries are becoming more and more mechanized. Automation is the use of control systems and information technologies to reduce the need for human work in the production of goods and services. In the scope of Industrialization, automation is a step beyond mechanization. Whereas mechanization provided human operators with machinery to assist them with the muscular requirements of work, automation greatly decreases the need for human sensory and mental requirements as well. This phenomenon is often known as the Industrial Automation. It is at this stage that we feel the need of aspirants having a strong foothold in the field of industrial Automation Control Systems.
